Oh My! It's July!
Jewelry Buying Tips: Is The Saying "All That Glitters Is Gold?" True?
GOLD FILLED OR GOLD PLATE? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Some help from the net:
"Gold FILLED jewelry refers to a specific type of gold jewelry that offers similar durability to solid gold without the hefty price tag."
"Gold PLATE jewelry merely covers the base metal with a thin layer of gold; gold-filled jewelry contains a thicker layer of gold. This makes gold-filled jewelry somewhat more resistant to tarnishing and chipping, giving it a longer lifespan."
STERLING JEWELRY
Have you seen the numbers 925 on jewelry?
What do those numbers mean?
925 means sterling silver.
The number 925 stamped on jewelry indicates 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% metal alloy. This 925 jewelry mark represents the international quality standard for silver, distinguishing real sterling silver from silver-plated pieces or base metals. These marks can sometimes be tiny! They can also appear on the small "flipper" part of a lobster claw clasp or a necklace part, which may be hard to notice. View the three photos below to see just how easy it is to miss seeing a stamp.
But be aware that even though some jewelry may be marked 925, it may not be genuine sterling! What to do?
Test it! A magnet will not stick to sterling. You can purchase very inexpensive magnets on key rings and carry it in your purse or pocket when you are out at a flea market or a thrift store. Although it may stick to silver plate as well.
Sterling tarnishes, but some silver plate will also tarnish. Yikes! You can also acid test your pieces with a kit that you can purchase. But if you love the piece you bought regardless of it being sterling or plated... just enjoy it!
